Our mission

Our mission is simple: to make UK legal rights accessible to everyone, regardless of income, education, or background. Legal information should not be a privilege reserved for those who can afford a solicitor. Understanding your rights is the first step to exercising them.

Know Your Rights UK covers the areas of law that affect people most in their everyday lives:

  • Benefits — PIP, Universal Credit, ESA, housing benefit, carers allowance, attendance allowance, mandatory reconsideration, and tribunal appeals
  • Employment law — unfair dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, sick pay, employment tribunals, zero-hours contracts, TUPE, and whistleblowing
  • Housing rights — eviction, Section 21, renters rights, repairs, deposits, damp and mould, and housing disrepair
  • Debt — CCJs, bailiffs, statute-barred debt, IVAs, Debt Relief Orders, bankruptcy, and breathing space
  • Council services — council tax, housing applications, planning, freedom of information
  • Consumer rights — faulty goods, refunds, Section 75, small claims court, chargeback, and subscription traps

All of our content is free. We do not place legal guidance behind paywalls. We do not require registration. We do not use advertising that restricts access to information.

How our content is written and reviewed

Our content is written by researchers with expertise in UK law. We work exclusively from primary and authoritative secondary sources — we do not rely on law firm marketing blogs, tabloid summaries, or unverified third-party articles.

Our primary sources include:

  • Acts of Parliament and statutory instruments, as published on legislation.gov.uk
  • Official government guidance published on GOV.UK
  • Tribunal and court decisions, referenced directly where cited
  • Guidance from authoritative bodies: Acas (employment), Shelter (housing), Citizens Advice (benefits and debt), DWP (benefits), HMRC (tax), and the FCA (financial)

Every page on this site cites the relevant statute or primary source. Where legislation applies differently across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, we make that clear on the page.

Pages are reviewed and updated whenever legislation changes, a significant court ruling is handed down, or government guidance is revised. Our legislation tracker lists every statute referenced on the site, together with commencement dates and the date we last reviewed content against it. You can read more about our process on our Editorial Policy page.

Our commitment to accuracy

Know Your Rights UK is a YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) site. The topics we cover — benefits entitlements, employment rights, eviction, debt — have real consequences for people's lives. We treat legal accuracy as a primary obligation, not a secondary consideration.

When the law changes, we update affected pages promptly — within 48 hours for major legislative changes, and within 7 days for minor changes. We track legislation via a formal internal tracker and carry out content reviews after every Budget, Autumn Statement, and significant court ruling.

Recent updates: Pages covering eviction and Section 21 have been updated following the Renters' Rights Act 2025 (Royal Assent 27 October 2025, Section 21 abolished 1 May 2026). Employment pages have been updated for the Employment Rights Act 2025, including day-one statutory sick pay and fire and rehire restrictions.
Important: This site provides general legal information only — not legal advice. Our content explains what the law says; it does not account for your individual circumstances. For advice on your specific situation, use our free guidance assistant below, contact Citizens Advice (0800 144 8848), or seek the advice of a solicitor or licensed adviser.

Our free guidance assistant

In addition to our written guides, we provide a free AI-powered guidance assistant that can give you plain-English answers about your specific situation — not just general information.

The guidance assistant can:

  • Answer questions about your specific situation in plain English
  • Explain your rights in the context of the nation you live in (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland)
  • Walk you through next steps and what to do if your rights have been breached
  • Help you draft a formal letter to a landlord, employer, or creditor
  • Signpost you to the right official bodies and free advice services
The guidance assistant is powered by Google Gemini and uses nation-specific knowledge. It is free to use and requires no sign-up or account. Like all AI tools, it can make mistakes — always cross-check important decisions with a qualified adviser or solicitor.

The assistant is available via the "Start Your Case" button on any page on this site. You can use it to ask about your situation in your own words — there is no requirement to use legal terminology.
