PIP and Other Benefits: What You Can Claim Alongside PIP
PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is not means-tested, and it is not affected by your income, savings, or other benefits. In most cases you can receive PIP alongside other benefits, and in some cases, PIP actually unlocks additional entitlements. This guide explains how PIP interacts with every major benefit you might be claiming.

PIP and Universal Credit
You can claim both PIP and Universal Credit at the same time. PIP does not reduce your Universal Credit, but it can unlock additional elements within UC:
- ✓PIP Daily Living component (either rate) can trigger the Limited Capability for Work (LCW) element in UC, worth £158.76/month (2026/27)
- ✓If you also have a Work Capability Assessment result of Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA), you receive £429.80/month instead (existing/protected claimants; £217.26 for new claimants from April 2026)
- ✓You do not need to be receiving PIP to have the LCWRA element, but PIP Daily Living can speed up the assessment process
- ✓PIP Mobility component does not affect UC payments but may help you qualify for other support
- ✓PIP payments are disregarded when DWP calculates your UC entitlement, they do not reduce your UC
- ✓If you are awarded Enhanced Rate Daily Living PIP, tell DWP, they will review whether you should receive the LCWRA element
PIP and ESA (Employment and Support Allowance)
Yes, you can receive both PIP and ESA simultaneously. They serve different purposes:
- ✓PIP is paid because of the impact of your disability or health condition on daily life and mobility
- ✓ESA is paid because you have limited capability to work due to illness or disability
- ✓The two benefits are assessed separately and do not reduce each other
- ✓PIP Daily Living can support an ESA claim, it provides evidence that your condition significantly affects daily living
- ✓If you are in the ESA Support Group, you may also qualify for the Enhanced Disability Premium on top of your ESA
- ✓ESA (contribution-based/new style) is taxable; PIP is not taxable
PIP and Carer's Allowance
Whether you are the PIP claimant or the carer, there are important interactions:
- ✓If you receive PIP Daily Living component, someone who cares for you 35+ hours/week may be able to claim Carer's Allowance
- ✓PIP Daily Living (Standard or Enhanced) triggers Carer's Allowance eligibility for your carer, they do not need to receive PIP themselves
- ✓You can receive PIP and also claim Carer's Allowance yourself if you care for someone else, these are separate entitlements
- ✓If you claim Carer's Allowance for someone you care for, it does not reduce your PIP
- ✓Carer's Allowance earnings: you can earn up to £204/week (2026/27) net and still receive Carer's Allowance
PIP and State Pension / Pension Credit
Once you reach State Pension age, PIP works differently:
- ✓If you were already receiving PIP before State Pension age, you can continue to receive it after State Pension age
- ✓New claimants over State Pension age cannot usually make a new PIP claim, they should claim Attendance Allowance instead
- ✓PIP does not reduce the State Pension, they are completely separate
- ✓PIP can trigger additional Pension Credit, specifically the Savings Credit element and disability additions
- ✓If you receive PIP Daily Living, you may qualify for the disability premium within Pension Credit
- ✓PIP Mobility component can unlock a Blue Badge and vehicle tax exemption at any age
PIP and Housing Benefit / Council Tax Reduction
Receiving PIP does not reduce your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, and can actually increase them:
- ✓PIP is disregarded as income when calculating Housing Benefit entitlement
- ✓Enhanced Rate Daily Living PIP may trigger a Severe Disability Premium (SDP) in some legacy means-tested benefits, a significant weekly addition (the rate is uprated each April)
- ✓SDP applies if you live alone and no one claims Carer's Allowance for you
- ✓PIP Daily Living (Standard or Enhanced) may entitle you to a Disabled Person's discount on Council Tax, contact your local council
- ✓A Disabled Band Reduction to Council Tax may also apply if your home has been adapted for your disability
PIP and Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
DLA has been replaced by PIP for most people, but some claimants are still on DLA:
- ✓Adults who were on DLA have been or are being migrated to PIP, this is ongoing
- ✓Children under 16 still receive DLA (not PIP), PIP starts from age 16
- ✓You cannot receive both DLA and PIP at the same time as an adult
- ✓If you are called for a PIP assessment and currently receive DLA, your DLA continues until the PIP decision is made
- ✓If your PIP assessment results in a lower award than your DLA, you can challenge it through Mandatory Reconsideration
Additional entitlements unlocked by PIP
PIP can unlock a range of additional benefits and schemes beyond the payment itself:
- ✓Blue Badge (disabled parking): PIP Enhanced Mobility automatically qualifies; Standard Mobility may qualify
- ✓Vehicle tax exemption: Enhanced Mobility PIP, 100% free vehicle tax
- ✓Motability Scheme: Enhanced Mobility PIP, use the allowance to lease a car, scooter, or powered wheelchair
- ✓Access to Work: PIP can support an Access to Work application for workplace adjustments
- ✓Disabled Persons Railcard: available to PIP claimants, 1/3 off most rail fares
- ✓Warm Home Discount: PIP may qualify you for help with energy bills through your supplier
- ✓Free NHS prescriptions: if your disability affects your medicine needs, check eligibility
- ✓Council tax disability reduction: contact your local council
- ✓Concessionary travel: many local authorities offer free or discounted bus travel to PIP recipients
The Blue Badge is one of the most valuable: scoring 8 points on the PIP "moving around" mobility activity (Enhanced Mobility) qualifies you for one automatically, and 10 points on "planning and following a journey" opens a route for people with hidden disabilities. See our Blue Badge guide for how to apply, the cost, and what it covers.
PIP and working, does working affect PIP?
PIP is not means-tested and is not affected by whether you work or how much you earn:
- ✓You can work any number of hours and receive PIP, there is no earnings limit or hours limit
- ✓Your salary or wages do not reduce your PIP
- ✓Working does not, on its own, trigger a PIP review
- ✓If your condition improves significantly because of treatment, and your ability to carry out daily activities changes, you should report this to DWP
- ✓Access to Work can provide additional workplace support for disabled employees, separate from PIP

Frequently asked questions
Can I claim PIP and Universal Credit at the same time?
Yes. PIP and Universal Credit are completely separate benefits and you can receive both simultaneously. PIP is not means-tested and does not reduce UC. In fact, receiving PIP Daily Living component can increase your UC by triggering the Limited Capability for Work element (£158.76/month) or Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity element (£429.80/month for existing/protected claimants, or £217.26 for new claimants from April 2026).
Can I receive PIP and ESA at the same time?
Yes. PIP (which covers the impact of your disability on daily life) and ESA (which covers your inability to work) serve different purposes and are assessed separately. They do not reduce each other. Receiving both is common among people with significant long-term health conditions.
Does PIP count as income for other benefits?
No. PIP is disregarded (ignored) as income when calculating means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, and Income Support. Receiving PIP will not reduce these benefits. In many cases, PIP actually increases your entitlement to other means-tested benefits.
Can someone claim Carer's Allowance for me if I receive PIP?
Yes. If you receive PIP Daily Living component (Standard or Enhanced rate), someone who provides you with at least 35 hours of unpaid care per week may be eligible to claim Carer's Allowance (£86.45/week in 2026/27). They must earn less than £204/week net from employment. Your PIP is not affected by them receiving Carer's Allowance.
What other benefits does PIP unlock?
PIP can unlock a range of additional entitlements including: Blue Badge disabled parking, vehicle tax exemption (with Enhanced Mobility PIP), the Motability Scheme, a Disabled Persons Railcard (1/3 off rail fares), potential Severe Disability Premium in means-tested benefits, council tax disability reduction, and Access to Work support in the workplace. Use an online benefits calculator after your PIP award to check everything you may now qualify for.
