Universal Credit Payment Dates 2026: When Will I Get Paid?
Universal Credit is paid monthly, on the same date each month, about a week after the end of each monthly assessment period. If your payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, you are paid early, on the last working day before, never late. Because payments can shift earlier around bank holidays, you may occasionally receive two payments in one calendar month; this is a timing quirk, not extra money.

How Universal Credit payment dates work
UC is paid monthly, in arrears. Each payment covers the previous monthly assessment period, and arrives about seven days after that period ends, on the same date every month.
- ✓Your payment date is fixed at the end of your first assessment period and stays the same each month
- ✓You can usually see your statement in your UC journal 3 to 5 days before payment
- ✓New claimants wait about 5 weeks for the first payment (you can request an advance)
- ✓Payments go by BACS into your nominated bank, building society or credit union account
What happens on weekends and bank holidays?
If your normal payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, you are paid on the last working day before it. Universal Credit is never paid late because of a bank holiday, it always comes early.
Christmas and New Year 2026/27 payment dates
The festive period shifts several payment dates earlier:
- ✓If your payment date falls between 25 and 28 December 2026, you will be paid on Wednesday 24 December 2026
- ✓New Year's Day (1 January 2027) is a bank holiday, so payments due that day are made on Wednesday 31 December 2026
- ✓Always check your journal for the exact date DWP confirms for you
Why you might get two UC payments in one month
Because payments are brought forward around bank holidays, your payment can sometimes land at the very start of one month and again near the end of the same calendar month , so you receive two payments in one month, then none in the following calendar month.
If monthly payments are hard to manage
A single monthly payment does not suit everyone. Support is available:
- ✓Alternative Payment Arrangements (APA): if you are struggling or at risk of rent arrears, ask DWP about being paid more frequently (for example twice a month) or having your rent paid directly to your landlord
- ✓In Scotland, you can choose twice-monthly payments and direct rent payments to your landlord as standard ('Universal Credit Scottish choices')
- ✓Budgeting support and, if you are in debt, a Breathing Space scheme may help

Frequently asked questions
What day is Universal Credit paid?
Universal Credit is paid monthly on the same date each month, about seven days after the end of your monthly assessment period. Your specific date is set at the end of your first assessment period and does not change, unless it falls on a weekend or bank holiday.
Is Universal Credit paid early on bank holidays?
Yes. If your payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, you are paid on the last working day before it. Universal Credit is never delayed by a bank holiday, it always arrives early.
When is Universal Credit paid at Christmas 2026?
If your payment date falls between 25 and 28 December 2026, you will be paid on Wednesday 24 December 2026. Payments due on New Year's Day (1 January 2027) are made on Wednesday 31 December 2026. Check your UC journal for the exact date DWP confirms.
Why did I get two Universal Credit payments in one month?
When payments are brought forward around bank holidays, you can receive one near the start of a calendar month and another near the end of the same month, with none the following month. It is the same monthly UC, just timed differently, not extra money, so budget for the month with no payment.
Can I get Universal Credit paid more often than monthly?
Possibly. If you are struggling with monthly budgeting or at risk of rent arrears, ask DWP about an Alternative Payment Arrangement, which can include more frequent payments or rent paid directly to your landlord. In Scotland, twice-monthly payments and direct rent payments are available as standard.
