What this section covers
This section is for drivers. It covers what happens after a speed camera or the police catch you speeding, how parking tickets from councils and private companies are appealed, how to complain about a car finance agreement, and the Blue Badge for disabled parking.
Where the rules differ across the UK, each guide says so, and the table below shows the main difference.
Which guide do I need?
Find the line that sounds like your situation and go to the guide beside it.
| If you want to | Read | You will find |
|---|---|---|
| You have been caught speeding | Speeding Fines | The fixed penalty, the notice rule, court fine bands and totting up. |
| You have a parking ticket | Parking Charge Notice | Council ticket or private ticket, the deadlines and the appeal bodies. |
| You took out car finance and want to know about compensation | Car Finance Claims | Complaining to your lender and the compensation scheme. |
| You need a disabled parking permit | Blue Badge | Who qualifies and how to apply. |
Where the UK nations differ
Most motoring penalties work the same way in England, Wales and Scotland. This is the difference that matters most.
| Topic | Where it applies | What differs |
|---|---|---|
| Speeding fixed penalty | Northern Ireland | A conditional fixed penalty, for example for being caught speeding on camera, carries a fine of £60 in Northern Ireland, against the £100 minimum penalty in Great Britain. |
