HMRC Tax Refund: How to Claim and When You'll Get Paid
Data last checked on .
Checked against GOV.UK. Edited by Steven Butler.
How you claim an HMRC tax refund depends on what you overpaid on. If HMRC works out you have paid too much, it sends a tax calculation letter, known as a P800, saying how to claim. If you think you overpaid and got no letter, sign in to your personal tax account and tell HMRC.
Key points
- ✓You cannot reclaim any tax you overpaid before April 2022.
- ✓You should get a P800 by 30 November 2026 if HMRC works out you paid too much tax between 6 April 2025 and 5 April 2026.
- ✓A P800 refund claimed online reaches your bank account within 5 working days of making the claim.
- ✓HMRC does not send details of tax refunds by email.
- ✓From the tax year starting 6 April 2026, you cannot claim tax relief for working from home, but you can still claim for the 4 previous tax years.
